Scope and Contents

The Paul K. Dougherty Collection includes photographs, documents, and various artifacts Dougherty obtained while in Germany. His collection contains rare original German propaganda publications such as Deutschland Erwach and Adolf Hitler. Also included in the collection is a personal photograph album that belonged to Nazi official and founder of the anti-Semitic newspaper Der Stürmer, Julius Streicher. Other items included are Nazi Party flags/fabrics, Paul K. Dougherty’s camera, and camera accessories.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Paul K. Dougherty Collection illustrates life in the United States Army Air Force through documents and artifacts. Also included are various artifacts Dougherty obtained in Germany. Following General George S. Patton’s Third Army, Dougherty reproduces significant places and events through his camera lens. Dougherty’s photographs capture common scenes such as basic training in the United States, deployment in England, France, and Germany; and to seldom witnessed sights such as Dachau, Buchenwald, Nuremberg, German prisoners of war, and Hitler’s house.

Paul K. Dougherty was born in New York in 1914 and worked for Kodak in the Film Emulsion Department located in Rochester, New York. Dougherty enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in 1942. He and his wife Ruth B. Millhofer Dougherty moved to Tallahassee, Florida for basic training at Dale Mabry Army Airfield and Lake Bradford. Dougherty also trained at Waycross Army Airforce Base in Waycross, Georgia. During World War II, Dougherty served as a Technical Sergeant with the 30th Service Group in the 9th Air Force as a photographer for General George S. Patton’s Third Army. He was stationed in England, France, and Germany during the war. After his wartime service, Dougherty and his family moved to Broward County in South Florida. In 1998, Dougherty's son Kevin noticed that his father's World War II belongings were in the trash and took them out knowing the importance of the items, donated them to Dr. William Oldson at the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. Paul Dougherty passed away in 2002 at the age of 87 years old.
