Biographical or Historical Information
This book contains the minutes of meetings from the very early years of Florida State University. The Florida Institute opened in 1855, offering both a college program and preparatory departments, but did not include a normal school or teacher-training programs. Tallahassee was designated as the site for the Seminary West of the Suwanee in 1857, absorbing existing Florida Institute. The Seminary became the first state-sponsored college in 1883, and in 1901 it was reorganized into Florida State College with four schools: the College, the College Academy, the School for Teachers, and the School of Music.
