Scope and Contents

Materials related to Stephen Graham, including a large collection of photographs, biographical materials, diaries and journals about his travels and experiences, articles and writings, samples of his poetry, art prints, and original artwork. Artifacts of interest are a Kodak box camera in a leather case, a vintage Cuban cigar box, Spanish lesson tapes and a tape recording of Persephone by Igor Stravinski. Subjects and persons of significance to the collection include: Marion Hay, Susil Gupta, John F. Ward, Orthodox Churches, air raid diaries and wartime radio show transcripts from World War II, Black people in Chicago, students, Joseph Epstein, the Balkans, Florida State University, Russia, Mikhail Nesterov, Michael Zoschenko's "The Tsar's boots and other stories," United States history, United States Constitution, Moscow, Tolstoy, Greek gods, the Bible, black slang, Egypt, Coptic Church, London, Vera Mitrinovic, Tallahassee, Pensacola, New Orleans, Southern States, slavery, Mormons, New York, Russia, Berlin, Vladimir Solovyof, Europe, Central America, Mexico, Estonia, Paris, England, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, School Board in London, anti-smoking, Scotts Guard, Little Sparta, camping in Scotland, Robert the Bruce, Peter the Great, Rome, Genghis Khan, Alexander Nevski, Miami, Southern speech and Texas. Biographical or Historical Information

Stephen Graham was born in 1884, the son of Anderson Graham. As a world traveler who felt especially drawn to Russia and Central Europe, he wrote more than fifty books. Many of these were direct narratives and descriptive accounts of his experiences. Stephen Graham married Vera Mitrinovic in 1956, after the death of his first wife, Rosa Savory.

Method of Acquisition

This collection was acquired by Strozier Library in three parts which have been combined to form one collection. Those items with manuscript number 76-10 were purchased from Mrs. Stephen Graham, 18 Kemp House, Berwick Street, London W IV 3 PL, through a gift of Dr. Marion Hay. The other items were gifts from the estate of Dr. Marion Hay.
