Bruce Means Papers

Dr. Bruce Means is a research ecologist, author, and consultant. His research includes ecosystems of the southeastern United States, fire ecology, the natural history of South American tepuis, biogeography, conservation, endangered species, and the evolution and natural history of amphibians and reptiles.

Donald Bruce Means was born March 9, 1941, in Los Angeles, California.

Means recieved a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Florida State University (FSU) in 1968. He earned a Master of Science in Ecology in 1972 and a PhD in Ecology in 1975. He served as a teaching assistant at FSU from 1968-1970, and Adjunct Professor in Biological Science at FSU starting in 1976.

Means's field experience as a research ecologist includes the Florida Panhandle, Southeastern United States, Alaska, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea.

His publications include scientific articles, technical reports, and popular articles in National Wildlife, International Wildlife, Natural History, BBC Wildlife, National Geographic, Fauna, South American Explorer, and other magazines. His books include two on the ecology of Florida and “Herpetophilia, Love of Creeping, Crawling Things.” He has featured in documentary films for National Geographic Television, BBC Television, and PBS.

Means is Founder and President Emeritus of the Coastal Plains Institute, Tallahassee, Florida.
