Scope and Contents

The papers include letters and one diary written during the Civil War (1863-1864) by Black to his wife, Mary Ann Black, from various places in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia and contain descriptions of army life and of the battlefields.

There is also a series of letters and accounts (1901-1913) between Black and a Tallahassee merchant, Julius Diamond, two land deeds (1857-1858) relating to land of the Forbes' Purchases, and a letter to Black from J.B. Whitfield, Treasurer of the State of Florida and later a Supreme Court Justice.

Additional materials consist of correspondence between Captain Hugh Black and his family between 1862-1864, as well as 2 photographs of Black reprinted from a photograph from 1862 and typed transcripts of letters from this collection. These letters are included in Letters of Captain Black to his family in Florida during the War Between the States, 1862-1864, compiled by Elizabeth Coldwell Frano. The book is housed in the FSU Libraries, and the call number is Fla E 467.1 .B62 A4 1998.

Biographical or Historical Information

Captain Black's grandfather came from Scotland as a young man and settled in North Carolina. His father settled in Gadsden County, Florida where Hugh Black was born, June 28, 1835. He served with Florida troops during Native American uprisings in 1855-56 and in the Confederate Army from 1861-1865. Captain Black served and was wounded in the Battle of Chickamaugua. In 1864, he became the County Tax Assessor of Liberty County, Florida and continued in this capacity for two years until moving to Leon County. He was elected Clerk of the Legislature in 1868 and also served several years as County Commissioner in Leon County. Hugh Black died May 19, 1915 in Tallahassee, Florida.

The papers became a part of the Special Collections through a gift of Mattie Black Hopkins, daughter of Captain Black, and of Mrs. Lawrence O'Dea, granddaughter of Captain Black (given Feb. 17,1964), and Miss Ruby Diamond, daughter of Julius Diamond.
