Scope and Contents

Manuscripts, typescripts, diaries, photo albums, and government documents related to Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Goulding of Tallahassee, Florida and their ancestors, including materials on the American Civil War, Key West (1830-1863), rationing during World War II, YMCA activities during and after World War I, Florida bank notes (1860, 1870), and souvenir photo albums and guidebooks from global tourist destinations (1905-1911).

This collection includes materials previously described as MSS 0-127.

Biographical or Historical Information

William R. Hackley (aka William Randolph Beverley Hackley, William Beverley Randolph Hackley, W.R. Hackley) was born near Richmond, Virginia in 1806. He attended William and Mary College from 1823-1824 and then settled near relatives in the vicinity of Tallahassee in 1826. Hackley was admitted to the Florida Bar and the following year moved to Key West. he served as district attorney for the southern district of Florida from April 1849 to May 1857.

Reverend Francis R. Goulding (1810-1881) authored the juvenile novel The Young Marooners (1852).

Reverend David Stratford Scadeng, Methodist Minister, was born in 1870 in London, England, and died 1957 in Miami, Florida. He came to the United States in June 1905, to Florida in September 1913, and later became an American citizen. Scadeng volunteered for YMCA service during World War I; from Fall 1918 to May 1919, he served at Camp Gordon, Georgia and at the YMCA recreation area in London, England.

Dr. Robert Lee Goulding was a member of the faculty of the Florida State College for Women and Florida State University from 1938 until his retirement in June 1960. Goulding is the grandson of William R. Hackley and son-in-law of David S. Scadeng.
