Biographical or Historical Information
Dr. Mode L. Stone, a native of Blountstown, Florida was born in 1902. He took the state teacher's examination in 1922 and began teaching without a high school diploma. While teaching his first year of high school in Greensboro, he was required to play on the football team. In 1923 he attended Locust Grove Institute in Georgia and earned both his high school diploma as well as two years of college credit. He received a scholarship and attended the University of Florida in 1926. After graduating as valedictorian he became principal at Leon High School. He joined the Navy during world War II. He earned his M.A. degree from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from George Peabody College. He joined the faculty at FSU in 1946 as professor of school administration. In 1951 he became dean of the College of Education, a position he held until 1956. While he was dean he helped to establish the Southern Scholarship and Research Foundation at Florida State. He retired form the faculty in 1973, and died in 1979.
